Go off the grid — time to do a digital detox

Hmmm… I know some people who need to digital detox — me, included! While my iPhone is not wielded to my hand like some people I know (I can survive not using it for an evening… seriously!), I know some people who would probably panic at the thought of not having their smartphones with them. I have to admit, I would too, not because I can’t bear to check what other people outside the here and now are doing (though I do that), but because it’s become a social crutch. Stuck for something to say? Whip out the phone! Need to fact-check something, go on the phone! In a gathering where I don’t know many people, I use the phone as a crutch to not socialize but when I’m with friends, I tend to leave it in my bag, save for the occasional check…. Hmmm, it should be a good exercise to see if I can last the whole evening without actually having to check my phone once. I mean, if people want to get in touch with me that badly, they can call. Otherwise, they can wait for me to get back to them when I’m done talking to the people who matter most.

Go off the grid — time to do a digital detox

My name is Terrie. I write for a living and blog for pleasure. Some days, I get up in the morning and know precisely what kind of day it is. At other times, I get knocked over for a loop. People seem to like confiding in me. When I was younger, I thought I knew everything and can tell you what you need to do if you ask me. Now that I'm older, I realize I don't know anything. That's been my motivation for the blog and for writing. To figure out the unknown and unknowable.
